For all of you music snobs who refuse to admit they like Mariah... skip past this post. For the rest of you, read on.
This is something my friend J and I do for one another. Truly, I've never met another person on this planet that loves music the way that I do... until Joanna. She gets excited over the sound of someone's voice, the right words being strung together and palpable emotion emitting through the speakers. I can't explain it but the closest I've ever come to defining the feeling is that when certain notes are hit or certain words are sung by anyone, not just Jon or Mariah, but certain notes come through and suddenly goosebumps appear all over your arms. It's that feeling for me when a new Mariah or Bon Jovi record comes out. And truthfully, I know people who have lost that excitement over music as they age and I just don't EVER want to lose it. My mother still feels that way about music and I love that I inherited it from her.
So September 29th is the day that Mariah Carey's released her new collection Memoirs of An Imperfect Angel. My first impressions of the collection as whole can be summed up by one word: intimate. This is an intimate collection of songs by an artist who traditionally doesn't let the listener enter her world too much. As a listener we're getting a better feeling for the true Mariah. Fun, flirty, sexy, spunky - the new Mariah is at ease with herself.
Each song tells a little story and creates a string for the next to pick up on. And accordingly, Mariah's voice is deep, intimate and almost conversational. There are moments where you feel like she's speaking directly to you, at times cooing, laughing and joking and other times, scolding. While some fans of Mariah's are not keen on the spoken feeling of some of the verses, Mariah definitely pleases all taking many songs over the top at just the right time. Onto the songs (not in order of the playlist):
Candy Bling
From the first notes, I truly fell into this groove. Mariah's sound is low, intimate and let's the groove of the melody and the "Back in the Day" sample by Ahmad take center stage. There are many highlights for me lyrically as well.

"My sweet baby, my sweet thing like candy, felt like real love not play play"
"I'm the same mimi, fame didn't change me, butterfly floating like Muhammad Ali"
"Thinking about the world, just me you and Jack."
Wow. I love how the bridge becomes personal, mentioning her late dog Jack. I love the reference to Butterfly and I love how her voice becomes strong at the end, letting her strength accommodate the melody without completely overpowering it. The feel of this song reminds of a favorite, The Roof, and I can have this on a loop and not get tired of it.
Standing O
At first, this song didn't excite me. I was so excited about other tracks that this is one that kind of got lost in the shuffle. The music is kinda simple. Strong drums with piano during the stronger parts of the song. Very hip hop inspired but I like hip hop so that's not such a bad thing. When I started to really listen to the lyrics, this part stood out:
"Cheers, a toast, bravo to you, cause you're the man of the hour, you played the one that loved you the most..."
I like the independent spirit, the strength behind the words. "Boy I gave you all of me, parts of affection you couldn't see...", "When you had nothing I gave, when you were weak, I made you brave." I just love the angry intimacy of it. What woman hasn't felt like this? And yet, how personal is this? Even the smaller voice that she sings, Parts of affection you couldn't see with draws you into the world and suddenly you're O, O, O'ing all over the place. Love it. But it was a grower.
Angel's Cry
Oh. My. God. When I first listened to this song, I was driving. By the end of it, my thought process was: should I be crying and driving at the same time? maybe I should pull over.
I wish I was kidding.
Not since We Belong Together has a song infected me this much. Classic in the making. From the lyrics, the simple, sparse music, to the melody and finally to the voice that sends shivers up and down your spine and goosebumps all over, this song is truly perfection. I can't gush enough... so I'll point out my lyrics.

I couldn't have prepared myself for this fall
shattered in pieces, curled on the floor

Wow. If you don't feel the emotion of the words you're cold. Just the heartbreak pouring out of the disbelieve that in fact supernatural love doesn't always conquer all is enough to make the poet in me cringe and want to plagiarize.

I'm getting chills already. I love the simplicity, the thankfulness in regret. I love everything. The voice, how the emotion pours from every syllable, the way the music is so restrained to allow the voice to exhibit the emotion. God. I can't even tell you how amazing it is to hear her take it to church at the very end and just hear the background vocals, the beat and the amazing voice. THE VOICE. That one note at the end. Tears. Ugh. AMAZING. I truly hope this is a single. I need to see this live.
Languishing
I knew I'd like this from the 30 second preview. It's intimate sounding and you know these are words that are coming truthfully from Mariah's heart. It's really a glimpse into some of the darker places in her heart and for me, superfan, that's an amazing glimpse. In the vein of Petals, the music a snap and a piano. The voice begins soft but with a vein of strength.

So many people I would love to send this to. So very many. I love how the emotion pours through without her voice becoming too overpowering. I love the intimacy. Truly a favorite.
Inseperable
I never heard the Time after Time sample until the second verse! Never would have guessed it was even there. I was kind of eh about this song. I think there are some brilliant moments, but I think I'm going to re-discover it next year some time... But just for fun the lyric that references the sample:

That's the only thing that tipped me off! And I kind of love that.
H.A.T.E. U.
This was the beginning of the end of for me when I was driving. I just wasn't even on the road anymore. I was inside my speakers. I fell into the song. Completely enveloped by it. I truly love this song with something otherworldly. I love the soft verse, the winding bridge to the chorus reminiscent of Minnie Ripperton. Everything about this song spells perfection. I love the music box sounding keys in the beginning, the fairy tale beginning that leads to the shattering of that very fairy tale. Most of all I love that the Hate U isn't really hating someone. I've always said that to hate someone so much you have to first love them that deeply. And that message is so clear in this song.

Betcha Gon Know
Different for Mariah! This song is a complete story. From top to bottom it sets the tone for the rest of the CD. It's hip hop influenced RnB, it's classic, it's that speaking sing songy voice and the entire chorus is 100% sung. Love it! And I really wasn't sure if I was going to. But I actually really love it...

Ribbon
Was not in love with this song at all. but then after about 30 seconds, the beginning and that annoying voice subsides, and the song starts and I love it. It's classic Dream sounding and I love it. It's nice to hear a song about loving someone. Nice to hear happiness with that wink of an eye that Mariah does so well.
More than Just Friends
This was a grower! I am surprised but I LOVE THIS! There are a ton of lyrics I love in this and the more I listen, the more lyrics I find in it!

The Impossible
Sexy Mariah sneaks out. I love the heavy Jodeci loop (Diary of a Mad Band, one of the most classic RnB CDs EVER). I love the chorus...

I'm really enjoying the intimate voice. It's not a whisper, but it's not a full voice, it's kind of in between. And where most singers would sound like they can't sing and are using this voice as a way to divert that, on Mariah, it draws you into her a bit more. I love it. I love the slow sexy grind of the music in direct juxtaposition to her soft, sexy voice.
And can we talk about how amazing Mariah sounds singing over the sample of Jodeci at the very end??? OMG! K-Ci and JoJo live on and sound amazing duetting with Mariah. I'd love to see THAT pairing live!
It's a Wrap
Well, no doubt about it. The Mariah from Vision of Love is back. That classic, doo woppy, bluesy sound is back and her voice is in tip top shape singing it. I love it! The melody is amazing! And I love the tough lyrics with the cooing... who would throw her out? You'd at the very least let her finish the song!

I Want to Know What Love Is
Not my choice for second single. I hope the video is brilliant to propel it. It's kind of bland until the very last 45 seconds where you sit in disbelief that she can actually sing like that. There's one note toward the end where you know where she's taking it and from then out it's amazing but for most of the song, I found myself waiting for it to get good.
Up Out My Face
I'm kind of ambivalent about this song. I think it's okay. I'll probably discover it like I did Love Story 2 years later but for now, I'm not really that impressed with it. I like the tough lyrics and the Caribbean feel and this particular lyric:
You ain't never gonna feel this thing again
YOu gon get a lot of calls cause I cc'd all your friends
That's kinda fun to sing and play with. And you know once it's on, I have fun with it but when it comes on I'm just kind of ready to forward past it.
So that's my review. GET OUT and get the CD if you haven't. It's truly going to be one of Mariah's personal favorite, you can hear the artistic movement in it. It's really a GREAT CD!
One of the reasons I love to run or work out using the elliptical and/or treadmill is that it's 45 minutes where I get to listen to my own music. I get to zone out, and really hear the words, take in the melody.
When I get new CD's I like to really feel the words. Let them wash over me, enter my soul and heart and digest the songs. It's the only way I know how to hear music. So in mid-July when two c.d.'s I had been eager to come out were released, I kind of became obsessed with one of them. Daughtry's Leave This Town is truly an amazing sophomore effort and I loved it. So much that I didn't exactly stop listening to it until last week.
But last week I heard this song, Lead Me On when it was shuffled on my iPod and I just became obsessed. So obsessed that I actually worked out to it on the elliptical for 45 minutes. Same song. Over and Over. Yep. That's me.
So I decided to listen to the rest of the CD and fell in love. Gloriana is a 4 member band of 2 brothers, Tom and Mike Gossin and 2 women, Cheyenne Kimball and Rachel Reinert. Cheyenne has had some fame as winner of America's Most Talented Kid at a mere 11 years old. She then went on to record a solo CD (which was very mature for her 15 years at the time) as well as have an Mtv Show. Apparently Cheyenne fell in love with Gloriana's music when she heard them in Nashville at a club called 3rd and Lindsley. And it's no wonder that she did.
Gloriana's talent is in their amazing 4 part harmonies. The men both play guitar and Cheyenne, a left handed guitar player by nature, taught herself mandolin. But since they don't exactly make left handed mandolin's, she learned to play it backwards and upside down.
So as I listened to the CD on the elliptical, a sweet, lullaby song came on and goose pimples covered my body. Then suddenly, tears were in my eyes as I thought of my son. I couldn't help it. The words just seemed to describe my feelings for him.
The song is Come & Save me. And my heart still skips thinking of the words. My journey to motherhood was rocky and I lost my faith in love along the way. Then my son came along and in many ways, he truly saved me. He's my little miracle. My amazing piece of heaven on earth. He's my smile, my heart and my soul. And I'm so glad he's mine.

You can listen to Bon Jovi's new single "We Weren't Born to Follow" from their forthcoming CD, The Circle, out November 10th here.
This CD comes with a huge promise of something different, BIG guitars and a return to the rock sound that made Bon Jovi famous. There's also the promise of a tour (that I probably won't have the money to go to since Jon is unable to keep promises to keep the costs on his tickets down... bitter much?) that is going to have 4 legs. For those who don't know what that means, it's the number of times that the band kind of "makes the rounds" across US, Europe and Asia.
My thoughts? Well.. It kinda sounds like It's My Life, Everyday and Have a Nice Day. A Bon Jovi blogger said that the song is "It's My Life part 4" and a mediocre version at that. I kind of agree. I was expecting something different and while Work for the Working Man, a song off The Circle that Jon played with studio musicians at an Entertainment Industry Association event, put fear in me and Bon Jovi diehards alike, this song kind of relieved that fear. It sounds like Bon Jovi. There's no doubt that this is a Bon Jovi song 200%.
But do we need a 4 part It's My Life? Really?
I like it. But I liked It's My Life. When It's My Life came out, it was different. 3 versions later, it's not so different anymore.
I like the lyrics and some lines are seriously gems for Jon. But this doesn't demonstrate Jon and Richie's best song-writing effort. And I'm really not sure the large and important NY Radio market is going to play an It's My Life Part 4 when they didn't play Part 3.
I wish they had continued to expand their musical and song-writing horizon's like they did on Lost Highway. While I am eager for them to return to their Rock roots, they needed to come out with something better. They have more competition now and this doesn't compete for me. Bands like Daughtry and Nickelback are taking what Bon Jovi did and doing it better. Daughtry's huge right now and Nickelback has had some killer singles (thought not off this new CD apparently).
I'm hoping there are better songs on the CD and this song just sounded like a great lead single.

I have never been a driver. I drive but got my license late in life and really looked at a car as a death sentence. I saw accidents and beheadings (don't ask) instead of a means to an end.
This morning though, I plugged my iPod in and was alone in the car. I put on a new CD (CD as in collection of songs on my iPod) and realized that there was no baby. No husband. It was just me and my music. I started to get lost in thought, lost in my music (which I'm not mentioning on purpose since those posts rarely get read), lost in the lyrics that seemed to express some of the melancholy that I've been feeling lately.
And for the first time, I felt free. I felt like the 25 minute drive to work was freeing. It was liberating. I didn't answer my cell when it rang. I didn't answer the texts coming through. I just enjoyed being alone with my thoughts and my music blaring.
I actually prayed for traffic. And as usual, God was busier with better things (like watching over our soldiers, answering prayers of the sick, dying... you know...) but hopefully I'll hit some traffic going home.
All of a sudden, I find myself completely into Rock again. Nickelback, Kings of Leon and now Saving Abel (cool name right?).... this is the VERY clean version of a much dirtier song. Addicted. I love it. Not much more to say other than, if you see me driving and I look like I'm singing to the wheel and completely rockin' out, this is what's on the radio. :-)
If there is one thing I like about myself it's my imagination. Nothing has taken me through more hard times than my ability to surround myself with a world of my own. From the time I was child through to well, now... my imagination has been there for me more than any friend has (well, except for Sharon).
I think my imagination was fostered by reading. Andrew and Sharon both agree that I don't so much as read as devour. And I re-read books that I love. I've read some of JR Ward's books 10 times. And I'm probably understating that number.
My mother was never one to just sit me down in front of the TV without first asking whether there was a book to read. And she engaged me in the books. She would talk to me about the characters and get me excited about the story so I wanted to read more and more. To be honest, my mother led by example. She, to this day, is never seen without reading material. Whether it's a magazine or a novel, wherever she goes, her book/magazine goes with her.
The last book that I was really into was Acheron by Sherilyn Kenyon. It's part of her Dark Hunter series. Acheron was widely anticipated by anyone who has read the Dark Hunter books and many didn't like it. They felt like the first half was extremely graphic and difficult to read while the second was too short and unsatisfying in terms of story line and character development. I for one loved it. And for the record, I got the book mid-November. It's roughly 900 pages and I've re-read it twice. I will probably do a third before the year is through.
In the book, Acheron sings a Nickelback song, "Savin' Me" to the leading lady. And I have to say that I have never been a huge Nickelback fan, ever. Well, except for that song, Photograph. You know the one... the song that every person on this planet swears was exactly like their high school experience. But after reading the three lines Sherilyn included in the book, I decided to give them a shot.
I'm like Nickelback Super Fan now. I love them! Their lyrics are impressive and really, if you impress me with your words, I'll like whatever you're singing. It's the first time a fictitious character has gotten me into a band. Guess there's a first time for everything!

I'd love to lie to you and tell you that I'm not a cheese when it comes to music but the fact of the matter is I am. I love everything as long as it's passionate and comes from the heart.
I'm NOT a big fan of American Idol save for my love of Daughtry. Well, I downloaded David Cook's CD this week and for the most part, it's filled with songs that sound like he's trying real hard to make himself successful which for me is the complete opposite of truthful music that is passionate.
Except for this one song called Permanent which was written for his brother who has brain cancer, Adam. I can't listen to this without getting that familiar lump in my throat and the mist that always clouds my eyes right before the tears fall. It's truly a shining moment on an otherwise bland collection of songs.

If you haven't heard, Britney Spears' latest CD Circus leaked online last week in its entirety. I stumbled across it and I have to say, it's okay. It's not mind blowing but there are about 4 or 5 tracks that are really good. One of them is the below, Out from Under. I don't know who wrote it but I really love the lyrics.

I'm impressed with the lyrics. I love the out from under part and the song is beautiful. She actually sings without the heavy processing that her producers usually put upon her voice. I'm pulling for Britney. I really hope this is it for her. She deserves it.
There is NOTHING I love more than finding a rare Mariah or Bon Jovi song. I'm a superfan. When I love an artist, I am obsessed and need to own every thing the artist ever did. So when Drew's napping and I'm not cleaning or taking care of the dogs, I look for MP3's of rare tracks that I may not have.
I found a track but not the MP3. It's KILLING me. I love Bon Jovi but I am not blind or deaf. Some of their albums have not been the best. Have a Nice Day was a good CD but I thought Jon and Richie were writing to get a hit. It sounded... like they were trying too hard.
Well. I found this track on Youtube... it's an outake from the Have a Nice Day cd and it's better than every single track on that album (is it an album any more?). The lyrics are just amazing, the music is genuine and the whole vibe is heartfelt. Sometimes I really wonder why Jon chooses the songs he does. Cause this one, it should have been on that CD.

I was so excited to watch BET's Access Granted last night with Sharon... they premiered the I Stay in Love video which Mariah's husband Nick Cannon directed. Access Granted is kind of like a behind the scenes glance at the video making process. What I didn't expect was to really enjoy Nick and Mariah's relationship. They seem genuinely happy and in love. Nick had me rolling, particularly when he was directing his wife in bed with another man... he was hysterical!
In any case, the video is good, not as amazing as I would have hoped since this is a powerful ballad and amazing vocal performance. Enjoy!
